Community Service

Our Community Service requirement is an effort to begin to instill in our MS/HS students a heart and spirit for service, obedience to the Word of God, and a commitment to community. Middle school students should experience many areas of service. High school students should begin to concentrate their efforts in one area of service.

To help students understand the spiritual implications of this requirement, Community Service has become a part of each student's Bible Class. Each student must earn at least 5 hours of service during each 9-week period and will be given a grade for the service. The students are to click here to download and complete a Community Service form then turn it into their Bible teacher who will initial the form and send it to the Student Services Office where the records will be kept.

  • Students may earn their hours at any approved service organization:
  • Give Kids the World
  • Rescue Mission
  • Second Harvest Food Bank
  • Food for Families
  • Events sponsored by the Cancer, Heart Association, Red Cross, or Diabetes Association
    (or other nationally recognized organizations)
  • Church Service or Mission Trips, Church Camps, etc.
  • The Edgewood Ranch or West Orange Christian Service Center
  • Hospitals or Nursing Homes
  • Or opportunities planned through the school such as Ronald McDonald House, Reading Reindeer, or the Oakland Nature Preserve.

Students who want to perform service in areas other than those listed should get prior approval.

The length of service: 20 hours per year in middle school, and a total of 75 hours in high school, is minimal. Most colleges are looking for students who have a record of hundreds of hours of commitment to one organization (especially during the high school years). Four or five hundred hours of service per student is not unheard of.

Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another.
Be hospitable to one another without complaint.
As each one has received a special gift,
employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the grace of God.
Whoever speaks is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God;
whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies;
so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ,
to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. I Peter 4:8-11
